Molding Foam |

Molding foams add structure to products without adding bulk, and also afford economical and efficient processing for the manufacturer. Typically, molding foams are dispensed into an open mold with a lid that is then closed, or are injected into a closed mold (RIM). Advanced technology from UTC has produced some of the highest quality molding foam systems in the industry. UTC manufactures water-blown, rigid and flexible molding foams that are available in high and low density specifications. |
In a typical molding operation, a mold with some sort of compound shell such as silicone is preheated and then coated with a release agent. The urethane foam system is also preheated and mixed (either by machine or hand) and then dispensed into the mold, taking into consideration the design of the part. Perhaps an oversimplification, this process is often referred to as the "wet out". Both the quality of the molding foam system as well as the skill of the individual dispensing the foam system is key to ensuring a quality part. The mold is closed and the foam rises, yet conforms to the configuration of the mold. The part then cures (hardens) and cools, upon which it is removed from the mold. The product can then be painted, stained, nailed, dovetailed, etc., and packed for shipping. |
Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) is an alternative method whereby an advanced polyurethane processing system is used to inject a foam mixture into a closed mold. This method allows for rapid production rates, particularly for large parts, and requires specialized equipment. |
There are numerous molding foam applications for rigid and flexible urethane foams. Production processes and tooling varies, therefore the choice of a urethane molding foam system is key to the application process and the quality of the finished good. UTC has been at the forefront of molding foam technology for more than a decade. Quality conscious manufacturers with a focus on reducing overall production costs partner with UTC and leverage our technology and experience in developing custom molding foam systems. |
| |
UTC has fire rated systems available and all molding foam systems can be processed through standard foam processing equipment. Many formulations are also available in hand mix reactivity's. |
| |
UTC molding foam systems allow for rapid production yet generate lower rework and scrap rates even for the most intricate shapes. This results in superior end products and lower cost of operations, increasing your competitive advantage. |
